Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Coldplay succeeded in creating new memorable memories for their fans through their first concert in Indonesia, Coldplay ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’ Jakarta at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium, last Wednesday (15/11/2023).

Since it was first formed in 1997, 2023 will be the first time the British band has set foot in Indonesia. Coldplay’s first arrival in Indonesia was also appreciated by drummer, Will Champion.

“Yes… Better late than never. It took us 25 years to get to Jakarta,” said Will Champion via Coldplay’s official X (formerly Twitter) account (@coldplay), quoted Friday (17/11/2023).

“This is really amazing. Thank you for waiting for us,” continued Champion while uploading a photo of his drums.

Not only that, the vocalist, Chris Martin, also promised Coldplay fans in Indonesia to return. This was conveyed when holding a concert at GBK.

“Thank you to Jakarta, I’m very happy. I promise I’ll come back again!” shouted Chris Martin.

It turns out that this feeling of gratitude is not only through words. In order to ‘celebrate’ their first arrival in Indonesia, Coldplay did a number of unique things that were able to entertain Indonesian fans and netizens. Anything? Here’s the summary.

Chris Martin Tours Jakarta While Nyeker

Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday (14/11/2023). Chris Martin immediately ‘celebrated’ this arrival by walking barefoot, aka nyeker, on the streets of the capital.

The moment Chris Martin walked on his feet was shared by Coldplay’s official Instagram account (@coldplay). In the upload, Chris Martin takes a selfie with his manager, Phil Harvey, on the pedestrian bridge (JPO) in the Karet area.

In the photo, Chris Martin is seen wearing a black hat and light gray T-shirt, while Phil Harvey is wearing a dark gray T-shirt. Both of them looked so sweaty that their clothes were wet.

In the second photo, Coldplay shared the moment the 46-year-old vocalist walked hard. Chris Martin’s appearance looked very relaxed with the black shorts he wore. This photo was taken at the West Setiabudi Reservoir.

Based on CNBC Indonesia’s search, the Google Maps location of the West Setiabudi Reservoir has even been marked by netizens with the name ‘Chris Martin Nyeker Here’.

Greet Fans with ‘Assalamualaikum’

During concerts, Chris Martin wears tight, colorful t-shirts as his trademark while performing on stage. The audience was very enthusiastic about listening to Chris Martin’s singing and capturing every moment.

Chris Martin is a musician who is known for being good at capturing the hearts of the audience through sentences and other fan service. This was done to build an attachment between Coldplay and the audience.

“Welcome everyone, Assalamualaikum!” said Chris Martin after opening the concert in Jakarta. These remarks were immediately greeted enthusiastically, raising the mood of the audience.

Borrowing Rp. 100 thousand from the audience

The trend of the joke “Borrow a hundred first” apparently helped ‘poison’ Chris Martin.

After performing the songs “Higher Power” and “The Scientist”, Chris Martin immediately threw rhymes at the audience with joke sentences that went viral among Indonesian netizens while playing the piano.

“Tuesday is the physics exam,” said Chris, which was greeted by the answer “Cakeeep,” from the audience.

“Tuesday is the physics exam. Study hard to pass. How is Jakarta? Can you borrow a hundred,” he continued, greeted by laughter, cheers and applause from the audience.

Not only “Borrow a hundred first”, the British singer also has other rhymes that are no less interesting for the audience. This time, he mentioned a local coffee shop brand.

“Walk to Senayan, in the afternoon buy Tuku. My Jakarta is the city of dreams, Coldplay is here for all of you,” said Chris.

Not only Chris Martin, Will Champion also expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to concert in Jakarta. This gratitude is expressed through his drums.

In an upload to Coldplay’s X account (@coldplay), Will Champion shows off his drum which has a picture of Monas and the words ‘Jakarta, 15/11/23’.

Sitting on stage

In their concerts, Coldplay is not alone in creating new memorable memories for fans. In the middle of the concert, a band from Indonesia, Maliq & D’essentials, suddenly appeared to give a special surprise performance.

Initially, Coldplay appeared on the main stage to sing a series of songs in their set list. After that, they moved to a smaller stage area to perform the song “Sparks”.

After singing the song which was released in 2000, Chris Martin said that he would perform special magic for all Coldplay audiences in Indonesia. In that magic, he said he would turn Coldplay into another band on the same stage.

“We have a magic trick, we will stand here and transform ourselves into another band. You won’t believe this, a magic like you’ve never seen,” said Chris Martin, who was greeted with question marks from the audience.

“So here’s the magic trick, turning Coldplay into Maliq & D’essentials!” said Chris Martin who was immediately greeted enthusiastically by almost 80 thousand spectators at GBK.

After being mentioned by Chris Martin, Angga, Indah, Lale, Ilman, Widi, and Dendy immediately appeared on stage and performed the song “Senja Teduh Pelita” which was released in 2019.

Interestingly, Chris Martin enjoyed Maliq & D’essentials’ performance while sitting on the floor or perched in the middle of where Angga, Indah, Lale, Ilman, Widi and Dendy were standing.

Chris Martin’s action also invited comments from netizens. Most netizens questioned the feelings of Angga et al. who ‘shared’ the stage with the legendary British band.

“How does it feel to be Maliq & D’essentials and be on stage with Chris Martin?” asked one netizen.

“It’s also cool that Maliq & D’essentials are performing with MC Chris Martin,” joked another netizen.
